Zuo Zongtang

Zuo Zongtang (1812-1885), whose courtesy name was Jigao, was born in Xiangyin, Hunan. He was one of the leaders of the westernizationists in the late Qing dynasty and that of the Xiang Army. In 1831, he was educated by He Xiling the head of Chengnan Academy. [See page 185 ofCihai(1999 compact edition) for more details. ]
