Zeng Guofan

Zeng Guofan (1811-1872), formerly called Zicheng, whose courtesy name was Bohan, and his literary name was Disheng. He was born in Bai Yangping (now in Shuangfeng), Xiangxiang, Hunan. He was a westernizationist and leader of Xiang Army in the late Qing Dynasty. In the middle of 1830s, he studied in Chengnan Academy. [See page 366 ofCihai(1999 compact edition) for more details].
