On September 25, Hunan’s major event of the 2021 National Popular Science Day was held in HNFNU, which was attended by Zhou Yixiang, the Assistant Secretary-General of Hunan provincial government, and the representatives of cohosts(the Provincial Science and Technology Association, the Provincial Party Committee Publicity Department, the Provincial Health Commission, and the Provincial Departments of Education, Science and Technology, Natural Resources, Ecology and Environment, Water Resources, Agriculture and Rural Affairs, and Emergency Management). Also in the event were 3 university leaders (Luo Chengyi, Tong Xiaojiao and Cao Xing) and more than 2,000 representatives of the faculty and students.
The event lasted from September 11 to September 30 with the theme of “Restart Towards Hi-Tech Independence─Promote Hunan’s Green Development”. Nine joint campagines were lauched in Hunan, namelyintroducing the concepts of peak carbon dioxide emissions and carbon neutrality, popularizing scientific and technological resources, improving citizens’ awareness of hygiene and health, helping citizens learn to deal with emergencies, encouraging scientific institutesto popularize science to the public, and smart technology for senior citizens, promotingSTEM education for teenagers, revitalizing ruralareas with science and technology, opening facilities for science popularization, and holding theFifth Provincial Science Literacy Online Contest. So far, 494 online and offline activities have been organized across Hunan. More than 180,000 volunteers have engaged in various science popularization activities inthe countryside, local communities, corporations, and schools. Within 20days, 10 million messages from China Science Communication and KepuHunan, two science popularization websites, have been disseminated by 1.6 million personnel in the Month of Science Communication.
This year, Hunan’s major event centered on the popularization of “Peak Carbon Dioxide Emissions and Carbon Neutrality”. On the Dongfanghong Campus, six events were held ─ theme lectures on “Peak Carbon Dioxide Emissions and Carbon Neutrality”, the quiz competition on the history of CPC and popular science, the speech contest on “Leading a Low-Carbon Life: Starting from You and Me”, the online quiz competition on “Peak Carbon Dioxide Emissions and Carbon Neutrality”, the popular science writing competition on “ Our Joint Effort at Carbon Neutrality”, and the “DIY Popular Science Class”.
The event was publicized through the internet. With online live broadcast and interaction channels, it attracted 520,000 people to participate in. For instance, the writting competition received 883 articles from 8 provinces, more than 20 cities, among which 86 won the prize of excellence. More than 20,000 people took part in the online quiz competition.
