Academician Xi Nanhua of the Chinese Academy of Sciences delivered a captivating lecture titled “The World of Mathematics” at HNFNU on October 10. The event, co-organized by the university and the Mathematics Education Branch of the Chinese Mathematical Society, drew over 200 faculty and students.
President Yu Zuguo chaired the session. Academician Xi began by asking the audience what first comes to mind when they think of mathematics. He then guided them through the history and concepts of numbers and shapes, illustrating how mathematics provides unique perspectives for understanding the world and solving practical problems.
Using engaging examples like the “River Crossing Problem”, the “Seven Bridges of Königsberg”, the “Drunkard’s Walk”, the “Lady Tasting Tea”, and solitary waves, Xi demystified abstract mathematical principles. He emphasized that mathematics education should foster a love for the subject and a deep understanding, not just transmit formulas.
In a lively Q&A session, Xi advised students to build a strong foundation, learn from masters, engage with peers and teachers, and persevere through difficulties. “Every theorem is the result of years of work by brilliant mathematicians”, he reassured students struggling with complex concepts. The lecture concluded with enthusiastic applause and students eager to interact with the renowned mathematician.
